Change your mind, change your life.
Thoughts are powerful. Yet few understand their power to transform lives. Your thoughts power your daily life. It is your thoughts that make you feel that life is exciting or a blessing or a grind. Changing your thinking will literally change how you feel about the world, your life, and others.
Why? It is a little bit like the chicken and egg question . . . Do you think what you think because of how you feel, or do you feel how you feel because of what you think?
Did you know your feelings come from your thoughts? Not the other way around. Your thoughts come first, but it is your interpretation of what you are thinking that determines how you feel. Positive thoughts will make you feel better about something while darker or negative thoughts will evoke a stronger emotional reaction and make you feel less than optimistic. The more you think a thought, the stronger that belief becomes. That belief is then stored away in your subconscious and becomes part of your map for navigating the world.
For example, one person may grow up believing God is good because that is what they have been taught to think since childhood while another is taught to think there is no God. So, both children will grow to adulthood with feelings that match beliefs caused by repeated thinking on that subject.
The same goes for a cancer diagnosis. Some survivors and their families feel their journey with cancer was the best thing that could have happened to them while others believe they endured a dreadful experience. Both camps use thoughts as their underpinning strategy to survive but their feelings about their journeys will be vastly different. Having lost a loved one to cancer more than a decade ago, I have changed my thinking, so I no longer feel like the whole experience was a terrible torment.
Changing what you think does change how you feel. Knowing this means that if you do not like what you see in a person or a situation, you can change what you are thinking (known as re-framing) and your feelings about it must change. It may not be immediate, but your emotions will align accordingly once that new belief is established. This idea is so beneficial when faced with a situation you are unhappy with. It gives you the power to choose your thoughts. By choosing what you think, you will feel more in control of your life and that is life-changing!
